Frontline Shield for Dogs is a flea and tick preventive. It is a topical that is applied to the skin, and then persists in the oil glands for one month. It is useful as an economical choice or as an alternative to systemic medications.

The active ingredient Fipronil is accepted worldwide as a flea and tick preventive, making this product particularly useful for dogs that plan to travel overseas.

Fipronil kills fleas and ticks by targeting a receptor in the arthropod nervous system. Because mammals lack this receptor, Frontline is very safe for dogs, cats, and humans.

Over 14 million doses have been given across the US, Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and more. In two clinical studies, Librela proved to be effective in controlling dog osteoarthritis pain when administered monthly. Librela has a good safety profile. Side effects were shown to be similar to what is expected for dogs diagnosed with osteoarthritis.

When you are planning for international travel, one of the most important documents is the rabies certificate. Often these are computer-generated and might lack some necessary information. Most veterinarians are happy to include this information if asked, and the best time to ask is at the time of vaccination.

ELEMENTS OF A RABIES CERTIFICATE:

Date Vaccinated

Date Vaccination Expires

Rabies Tag Number

Name of owner

Owner address

Name of pet

Microchip Number – It is very important that the pet is microchipped before the rabies vaccine and that the number is printed on the rabies certificate. Chip type must be compliant with the destination country.

Telephone number

Species

Sex

Date of Birth (DOB) or Age

Weight

Breed

Color

Rabies vaccine serial/lot number, date of vaccine expiration, brand name, producer, type, and duration. All countries accept killed virus rabies vaccines. Most will accept the PureVax feline vaccine (live canarypox vector).

Veterinarian Signature, ideally hand-written in blue ink

Veterinarian name

Veterinarian practice address

It is important that this information is as consistent as possible. If your rabies certificate says that your cat is “purple with green spots” but your international health certificate says “green/purple”, then that is not ideal. Breed, sex, date of birth, owner’s name and address, etc. All should be correct and match.

These tips are presented as a way to help owners smooth the international travel process. As always, check with USDA-APHIS for the most accurate, authoritative information. https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/pet-travel

The white matter of the thoracolumbar spinal cord degenerates, resulting in progressive weakness of the hind legs and an uncoordinated gait.

A DNA mutation has been identified as a major risk factor for the development of degenerative myelopathy. It is inherited in an autosomal recessive fashion. UC Davis has developed a test that owners can submit on their own. Follow the link to find out more:

Pet License

State law and local ordinance require the annual licensing of dogs and cats. Any person, who owns, feeds, keeps or harbors a dog or cat for more than 10 days must obtain a license. Pet owners, who have already licensed their pets, should renew the license no later than January 31 of each year. All licenses expire December 31 of each year, regardless of the date the license was obtained.

The fee for a spayed/neutered dog or cat is $12.00; the fee for a non-spayed/non-neutered dog or cat is $15.00. There is a $25.00 late fee for all pets whose licenses are renewed after May 10 of the licensing year.

To obtain a dog license, you must show proof that the animal has a valid rabies vaccination. As per State law, a valid rabies vaccination is one that DOES NOT EXPIRE BEFORE NOVEMBER 1 OF THE LICENSING YEAR. If your dog’s rabies vaccination expires before November 1 of the year in which you are obtaining a license, you must have your pet revaccinated before we can issue a license. Cats must have a current rabies vaccination at the time a license is obtained.

The Township offers a FREE rabies clinic each year on the first Saturday in May.
